Ever wonder what's inside that can, box, or carton?
The term “Processed Food” refers to anything that changes a food from its original form. The USDA lists it as anything that has been crushed, cut, chopped, diced, sliced, pitted, blended, pureed, juiced, or dried. So that would also include any food that has been cooked, canned, frozen, fortified, or preserved.
We process foods all the time in our kitchens, with our “food processors” and blenders and stoves. Just because a food is processed does not necessarily mean it’s bad for us, However, there are different levels of processing, and the MORE processed a food is, the more health risks is poses.
Ultra Processed Foods (UPFs) are by far the worst choices, yet American adults get nearly 60% of their calories from UPFs, and even more concerning, our kids get about 67% of their calories from these unhealthy products. Click here to learn more about UPFs, the impact they have on our health, and which products would be acceptable to add to your cart.
